Sharp Island HONG KONG

Sharp Island HONG KONG

Sai Kung - Sharp Island, Hong Kong

I think I finally found my favorite spot in Hong Kong! Sai Kung in the outer east part of the peninsula is just the right kind of chill, laid-back vibe that I need from the stressful hustle bustle of the the city and the chaotic noise of the current political situation.

A beautiful small town near the shores with access to multiple smaller islands perfect for day excursions, the place gave me that Asian small coastal vibe that I’ve seen throughout the movies and blogs. There are so many privately run shuttle boats along the Sai Kung Pier that offer rides to different locations. We were originally planning to go to Yim Tin Tsai but they no longer had boats by the time we went there. So we opted for Sharp Island instead, which was equally amazing!

Getting to Sai Kung Pier

There are multiple ways of getting to Sai Kung, but here’s the most convenient way using public transportation and we found it very easy to navigate and of course, affordable!

From Hong Kong Island

  • Take Island Line MTR to Quarry Bay

  • Transfer to Tseng Kwan O Line to Hang Hau Station

  • Take 101M Minibus to Sai Kung Pier

Getting to Sharp Island from Sai Kung Pier

Once at Sai Kung Pier, you will see multiple privately operated shuttle boats. Almost all of them go to all the destinations, such as Sharp Island, Yim Tin Tsai, etc.

We went with Meow Meow (lol I know - their logo had a cute cat on it) and got a round trip boat ticket for HKD30 per person.

The island is very close to Sai Kung but the boats run a bit slow so it took about 15 minutes to get there.

Sharp Island

A beautiful area with lush vegetation throughout, Sharp Island is a small island that is connected to an even smaller island through a scenic sand levee made out of large rocks and pebbles. The tide is usually low enough that you can walk through the pebble level to the smaller sub-island.

We hiked up the smaller sub-island and reached the other side where there is a secluded beach. The water was so clear and there was practically no one there when we walked past. We walked by the beach and through the rocks to get back to the levee. Unless you are wearing walkable shoes or have very good balance by hopping from rock to rock, I do not recommend going back to the main levee that way…I wore some sandals that were a little loose around my feet and it was a real struggle walk back by the rocks. I pretty much either walked in the water on the shallow parts of the beach or climbed my way through the rocks. My thighs were quivering like crazy by the time we got back to the levee that it felt as if I did 200 squats.

The day was too hot for continuing the hike on the main island but I’ve heard good things about the hike and it does come with a lot of great views so don’t miss out if you are up for some extra exercise!

The main island also comes with two beaches. One is completely rocky and no place to lie down - not sure why they made it a beach to be honest - and the second one is much nicer with a shallow area for a beach to lounge.

This day trip has definitely been our favorite thus far and I would highly recommend checking it out!
